What this tool is for
Whois answers who registered a domain, when, through whom, and when it expires. This queries the registry first and then follows the referral to the registrar, which is where the detail lives for most top level domains. Both the parsed fields and the raw response are shown. This is one of the few tools here that needs a server, because the question is about the internet rather than about your data. The request is made from our server, rate limited, and nothing you enter is stored.

Frequently asked questions
Why is the owner name hidden?
Since GDPR, registries redact personal data in public whois. Registrars usually offer a forwarding address instead. Company registrations are more often visible than personal ones.
What do the status codes mean?
clientTransferProhibited is normal and good: it blocks transfers until you unlock the domain. Codes containing pendingDelete or redemptionPeriod mean the registration lapsed and the clock is running.
The expiry date is close. What happens next?
Most registrars auto-renew, but after expiry there is a grace period, then a redemption period with a recovery fee, then the name drops. Do not wait for the last week.
